How to Choose the Best Photo for Laser Engraving
A personalised photo engraving can turn a special memory into something you can keep, display, or give as a meaningful gift. But the final result depends heavily on the quality of the photo you provide.
At M&L Studio, we prepare each image carefully before engraving, but starting with the right photo helps us achieve the clearest and most detailed result possible.
Choose a clear, high-quality photo
The better the original image, the better the engraving is likely to look.
Try to use a photo that is sharp, in focus, and large enough to show the important details clearly. Photos taken directly on a phone or camera usually work much better than images downloaded from social media or screenshots.
If possible, upload the original photo file rather than a compressed version.
Good lighting makes a big difference
Photos with even, natural lighting usually produce the best engraving results.
Very dark photos can lose detail, while very bright or overexposed areas may appear washed out.
A good photo should show the subject clearly, with enough contrast between light and dark areas.
For portraits, photos taken in natural daylight are often ideal.
Keep the main subject in focus
Whether you are engraving a person, pet, vehicle, building, or another special subject, make sure the main focus of the photo is clear.
A slightly blurred background is usually fine, but the subject itself should be sharp.
If the face, eyes, fur, lettering, or other important details are blurred in the original image, it may be difficult to recreate them clearly in an engraving.
Avoid screenshots where possible
Screenshots can sometimes work, but they are often lower quality than the original photo.
They may also include unwanted elements such as icons, borders, text, or reduced image resolution.
For the best result, upload the original photo from your phone, camera, cloud storage, or photo library whenever possible.
Simple backgrounds are easier to work with
Busy backgrounds can sometimes distract from the main subject.
If you have a choice between several photos, a picture with a cleaner background will usually be easier to prepare for engraving.
That said, we can often remove or simplify a background during the preparation process, depending on the image and the product.
Contrast is important
Laser engraving works differently from printing a colour photograph.
The final image is created through engraved tones, highlights, shadows, and contrast.
Photos with a good balance of light and dark areas generally translate better into engraved artwork.
Images where everything is extremely dark, extremely bright, or very similar in tone may need more adjustment before engraving.
Portraits and pet photos
For portraits, close-up images usually work best.
Try to choose a photo where:
- the face is clearly visible
- the eyes are in focus
- there are no strong shadows covering important features
- the subject is not too far away
- the image has good overall lighting
The same applies to pets. Clear photos showing the eyes, face, fur, and distinctive features usually produce the best results.
What about old or damaged photos?
Older family photographs can still make beautiful personalised gifts.
If the photo is faded, slightly damaged, or scanned from an older print, we may still be able to work with it.
The important thing is to provide the clearest version you have available.
For very old photographs, a high-quality scan is usually better than taking a quick photo of the printed picture.
Avoid heavy filters
Strong filters can remove natural detail, change skin tones, increase noise, or reduce contrast.
If possible, send us the original unfiltered image.
We can prepare the photo specifically for engraving rather than relying on effects designed for social media.
Think about the shape of the product
The shape and size of the item can also affect which photo works best.
For example, a square tile may work better with a centred portrait, while a rectangular plaque may suit a wider image.
If the photo needs cropping, we will try to keep the most important parts of the image in the final design.
Not sure if your photo will work?
If you are unsure, send us a message before ordering.
We are happy to take a look at your photo and let you know whether it is suitable for engraving or whether another image might give a better result.
At M&L Studio, we want every personalised piece to feel special and look as good as possible.
